What is Bonsai ?

Bonsai is the art of growing plants and trees in pots. Unlike planting in pots, you can grow almost all types of trees that grow in the wild using techniques of Bonsai. Thus bonsai is an artistic hobby. Bonsai originated in Japan during the fourteenth century. However, it wasn’t until the seventeenth century that it became popular. t’s an important part of the Japanese cultural and artistic tradition. By late 19th century, people throughout the world started cultivating bonsai.

Beyond the Spirits of Bonsai - 2016

In its endeavour to spread this beautiful art and bring awareness of this lovely art, the Ashram is hosting an International Bonsai Convention and Exhibition from 19th – 22nd December at the Ashram premises. People will get not only a chance to visit the famous Bonsai garden, but also listen to and interact with eminent Bonsai artists from across the globe.

Sri Swamiji & Bonsai

Sri Swamiji’s love for greenery and ecology is legendary. The horticultural activities started right after the Ashram (monestary) was established in 1966. Bonsai activity then, was a personal hobby of Sri Swamiji and over the decades Sri Swamiji had a collection of over hundred carefully nurtured bonsai plants. In 2005, Sri Swamiji developed a garden named KISHKINDHA MOOLIKA BONSAI GARDEN and showcased all the bonsai plants in one garden.
"Bonsai is a rare human endeavour that has held me in awe and introspecting over years. In the miniature plant lives a grand life. It reflects the cosmic creation, the play of celestial paradoxes near, yet far, more, yet less, known, yet unknown, small yet big"

- Sri Swamiji
